Every day we hear more about the new “hybrid” dogs, or “designer” dogs. Each feature is accompanied by pictures of adorable puppies that are examples of this new “breed.”
Of course they’re cute! All puppies are! Should you pay hundreds, and in some cases, thousands of dollars for one? Certainly not! The offspring of a mating between two purebred dogs of different breeds is a mongrel, a mutt. And if you have one, you should love it, train it and care for it as if it had the bluest blood of the canine kingdom.
Every dog breed, and there are hundreds in the world, was “created” by humans. Each breed was developed for a specific purpose – whether that original job was guarding the flock or being the ideal lap-dog. There’s no reason that development shouldn’t continue. If there is a need for a dog with particular characteristics, enterprising individuals will come forward to fill that need.
However, it takes many generations to “breed true.” Compare yourself to your siblings. Do you all have the same looks, same personality, same interests and strengths? Chances are, you don’t. Each of you has some of the “best” traits of your parents. But those may not be the same traits. And each of you has some of the worst.
Two of the best-known mixed-breeds out there now are the “Golden Doodle” and the “Puggle.” The thinking behind these crosses is fairly obvious: wouldn’t it be nice to have a Golden Retriever’s personality and willingness to please combined with the Poodle’s non-shedding coat and intelligence? Wouldn’t it be equally delightful to have a small dog without the breathing issues of a Pug, but quieter than a Beagle?
But there is no way of knowing you won’t get a high-strung, noisy, stubborn, slobbering mutt who sheds like the dickens!
If you are considering spending the kind of money that these “hybrids” are commanding, be sure to research all of the traits of the contributing breeds. You will get a mixture of the two. And an equally adorable mixture may be waiting for you at your local shelter – the size you want, with the coat you want and the adorable face that melts your heart.
If you require certain characteristics in your puppy – whether a family member has allergies, or you have a very small, or no yard, or your household requires a quiet, “easy keeper,” or if you wish to fully participate in the world of canine competition, consider a pure-bred animal. How to handle a dog fight
Dog fight! Did that just send a shiver down your spine? They’re two of the most dreaded words for a dog owner. Every dog owner fears them and try their best to avoid them, but sometimes they still happen. Maybe you’ve been approached by an off-leash dog in your neighborhood, or you meet an unfriendly pooch at the dog park. Or maybe even your own two dogs who are normally BFF’s have a little lover’s quarrel.
Dog fights happen and we have some tips to help deal with them.
First up: do not put yourself, your hands or any body part in the middle of a dog fight. Fighting dogs are so out of their brains and even Fido, who you swear would never bite a human, may accidently bite you. Hands out!
Most dog fights can be broken up with a sudden aversive. Re: you need to scare the bejessus out of them. Get them to focus on the commotion you just made and you can use the opportunity to secure the dogs.
Good items include:
- Air horn
- Whistle
- Keys thrown at a hard surface
- Steel dishes banged together
- Banging a wall, door or any other hard surface
- Car horn
Make the loud noise and stop the instant dogs disengage. Try for a couple seconds and if this doesn’t work, move on.
Next up, it’s time to use water. Water from a hose is best (spray with a purpose – aim the hose directly at a dog’s mouth or nose. Spraying them on the butt or side isn’t really going to do much) Dumping a bowl of water on their faces is also a good option. If you have citronella or pepper spray handy, these are also good choices (try to avoid their eyes with these options)
Another option is throwing a blanket or jacket over the dogs to disorientate them. You just need the dogs to be startled long enough to disengage, so you can separate and secure them.
Still not working? Usually by this time, one of the above tactics has worked. If not, it is time for the most experienced dog handler(s) to get involved.
Grasp the dogs back legs near the groin and pull them straight up, much like a wheelbarrow. Be aware that there is a chance of a redirected bite.
Pull both dogs simultaneously quickly out and up, raising the rear quarters off the ground.
Once the dogs are separated, secure both dogs and assess for damage.
If a dog has latched onto another dog and not responded to the loud noise, being sprayed or being pulled apart, you will need to pry its mouth open. Your best option is a stick of some sort. Force the stick across the back of the dog’s mouth and pry it open.
Another option is straddling the latched dog and immobilizing its head to avoid further injury. At some point, the dog will release and you will then have immediate control of the head to move it.
Are you alone and dealing with a dog fight? Try noise first and then spray. If either doesn’t work, you’re going to need to pull the most intense fighter off. If you’re not sure who the most intense fighter is, you need to pull the dog who is less likely to be controlled by your voice off. If one of your dogs is involved, this usually means pulling the stranger dog off.
We all hope we never have to deal with a dog fight, but the best thing you can do when dealing with one is staying calm. Dogs feed off people’s energy and the more excited you are, the most excited the dogs will get.

3 easy to teach dog tricks
To teach your dog tricks even easy ones you need to have some small reward treats, be in a quiet suitable place and keep the training sessions to 10 - 15 minutes or your dog will start to get board, remember when he gets something right lots of praise and a reward treat, just be careful not to get him over excited or he will loose concentration.
Getting your dog to give you his paw, first get your dog to sit, then as you say the word 'paw' take your dogs paw in your hand, give the dog a treat, repeat this, after a few times do not take his paw so quickly, say the word, count to one then take it, you should notice he is bringing his paw up as you say the word if he does not go back to saying it at the same time, do it a few more times then slow your response again. After 2 or 3 sessions most dogs pick this one up quite happily.
The high five, like a lot of tricks the high five is a progression of an earlier trick, in this cast the paw trick. Hold a treat in your fingers and raise your hand slightly higher than you would for the paw trick. You dog will think you want to do the paw trick and will reach for the treat with his paw as we taught him earlier, as he reaches up you say “high five” and give him the treat. Once your dog has mastered the paw trick this one should be very easy to learn and with just a few sessions he will be doing it on hand signal rather than voice control.
Getting your dog to jump through a hoop, before you start this one I would just like to ask you to be a little sensible and not hold the hoop too high as you do not want your dog to heart himself while doing the trick. Sit your dog on one side of a hoola hoop, get the dogs attention on your hand on the other side of the hoop take a treat in your hand and give the dog the command to release him from the sit, at first he may attempt to go around or under the hoop, if this happens start again, your dog wants the treat and will soon learn that going around or under does not get it so he will soon start going through it, when he does say hoopla and give him the treat. He will soon be jumping through the hoop on the command of hoopla. When I started doing this trick I had a medium sized dog (a Labrador) so I started with the hoop 6 inches from the ground and slowly raised it to waist height, if you have a smaller dog you might want to start with the hoop touching the ground so the dog just goes through the hoop and then slowly raise it as he gets used to the trick.

A Black Cat is Just a Cat

When my old cat died, I decided to pick one out of the Humane Society. They had named the first cat I saw “Batman”, and I fell in love with him on sight.
But when I brought him home, I discovered he didn’t quite have the courage of the comic book hero. I made some mistakes which resulted in a month long struggle to coax him out of his hiding place to join the family.
I renamed him Bear, and he is wonderful cat, but my guests seem a little uncomfortable when he comes into the room. After all, he is completely black.
He is a black cat and some people are afraid of Black Cats…
The Black Cat in History
Historically, black cats have been associated with omens, bad luck and, well...evil.
The poor unfortunate kitties have been used in rituals, and were supposedly the "familiars" of witches. Anarchism has used the symbol of the black cat, as has Wicca, the modern day expression of Witchcraft. Superstition has associated bad luck with having a black cat cross your path.
All-in-all, the black cat has been getting some really bad press for centuries, and all of that is not easily overcome in just a few short lines of this article.
Scaredy Cat
A very highly sensitive cat, our new black Bear was far more scared of us than we were of him, and we made a number of mistakes in the first hour of his introduction that practically destroyed our chances for introducing him to our home.
The process of first finding Bear where he had hidden in the house and gradually coaxing him out of his hiding place to join the family was long and agonizing. It took over a month, and I had almost despaired that we would ever acclimate him.
Patience won out, though…
Superstition Dispelled
Since then, Bear has been rolling around on my lap enjoying his daily pettings, sleeping in my bed, yowling at the females he sees from his perch in the kitchen window and just generally bringing a lot of joy to our lives.
He is here to dispel the notion that a black cat means bad luck. He is one of the sweetest cats you'll ever meet, and there's absolutely *nothing* scary about him. And I can tell you for a fact that no bad luck is connected with Bear. He's crossed my path innumerable times, and so far I haven't experienced anything one might think of as "bad luck".
I have to say, though, that on Halloween night he seems to be scared of his own black shadow. But I try to keep him calmed down and happy to be where he is...in my lap purring as loud as he can!
